Crit 4 Vintage Zachary Van Heel

  1. Hello Zach!

Really awesome shots, your editing is really spot on for the vintage look. My favorite is the 9th photo. It is a mysterious looking photo, but the light brings it together. I really like the angles that let the light in, as if the camera's focus were tunnels. Your usage of light and editing is great.

  2. The light and tones that you've captured here are really successful in showing the idea of vintage and memory. I really love the architecture and the textures that you've captured, it really shows the wear and history of surfaces, like in #4,5,7. The 7th photo is my vote for the best. I really enjoy these textures and tones of color. It's simple and subtle but I think it has a really good tone and mood.

  3. I notice a lower white balance in many of these images as well as shocking brightness in a majority of these. I really enjoy the variety of subject matter in your images. The compositions are fairly simple which sets the tone for the vintage-y touch for this weeks critique. I learned this week the power of editing tools are practically immeasurable, i apologize if you have not used much editing- but nevertheless it seems you had a great time utilizing found imagery and enforcing the vintage appearance onto them.

  4. #8 is my favorite. I like the desaturated colors and the seemling endless nature of the tunnel. I like that the focus of the shot is just slightly off-center. Overall I think the grungy, desaturated look of your shots work well given the subject of the crit. In some photos, I can't tell whether effects were used or the natural look of the environment gives off the vintage vibe. In others (like 9, 11, 12, etc.) the use of effects is more obvious and the effects used were pretty interesting. I think you did a good job of taking some photos that looked like they could actually be older, aged photographs.

  5. I like the filters on a lot of these. They give off a very vintage and aged feel. Number 8 is my favorite. I don't know exactly why, but it kind of reminds me of a scene from Inception where they are walking through his dream world and could manipulate the setting. It just looks like something from a dream where you would look down a tunnel and it seems to go on forever.

  8. 14 is my favorite. I love the use of the filter and the colors. It invokes a sense of loneliness and sadness, but in an oddly refreshing way.
